I have been told that at least under some now obsolete UNIX versions
this wasn't possible. People at PARC experimented with such things
before I went there. Apparently reads from some devices don't keep
sufficient state in this case to be able to restart the read without
losing data. I don't know of anyone who has tried this recently.
