Word has undo, but not across session boundaries.  The garbage is
definitely garbage.  This goes back to the earliest versions of Word,
which didn't have undo but did have garbage in the file.

Word files are structured as chunks of stuff with pointers, so getting 
rid of the garbage requires in effect a compacting GC.
