Some colleagues of mine (Richard Hudson, Ron Morrison, and David Munro) and I
have devised a scheme called DMOS (Distributed Mature Object Space), reported
briefly at OOPSLA '97, and with a longer journal article in the works, that may
at least somewhat fill the bill. It does not deal directly with replicas, but
I think it could be adapted to do so, especially if replicas were treated as
distinct objects for purposes of gc. You can find the various versions online
