Thanks for your reply. As you say, perhaps the term "handle" in memory management was borrowed from the OS field. But even if this is so, I would like to know where the concept originated in the memory management domain. I'll take a look at Smalltalk's blue book but I'm almost sure (as you suggest) that some older Lisp system must have used this first. Marc
