Why a filesystem? [jjl2]

Why do we need a filesystem?  Shouldn't a hard disk be considered an
extension of memory?  As should any other device?  What do you think of
this idea?

I have 290 email messages totaling 1.3 Mb of disk from Moose!  Wow!
