"OS checkpointing"

hi all,
I am CS student ..
I have done a something weird in Linux 2.4.21
Its same like snapshot and revert in VMware
i took a snapshot of OS(everything) and save it on disk and then i revert 
complete OS to that sate if user want OR iff Kernel PANICS...i know this 
mailing list is not for technical discussions ..
but i want to explore this idea as an Operating System extension...

Is any OS is doing such thing...???
