The Programming Research Group of Amsterdam University
(http://www.science.uva.nl/research/prog/) has interesting papers
on the subject of reverse engineering and system renovation here:
In some(?) researches they use an environment for language
prototyping, ASF+SDF, developed at CWI (http://www.cwi.nl/) in the
contest of the project GIPE (Generation of Interactive Programming
Environments):

The ASF+SDF project
/ASF+SDF Meta-environment./ A system for generating language-
specific environments from algebraic specifications of
(programming) languages. Currently implemented as part of the
Centaur system. Soon to use the ToolBus component interconnection
architecture.

Unfortunately only SGI and Solaris platforms seems supported.
