[BUG] Unix(ish) builds

It seems that Attila's work with plugins has required this work-around:
"export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=(slate working directory here)"

be run before executing "make plugins" .. it's either that or including 
the setting within the Makefile. This configuration is still in flux so 
there will likely be a solution soon.
