alpha vm endless loop at bootstrap?

It's a false alarm. I suggest working from totally clean images. In  
such recent images, the Windows path-reading problem does not  
manifest, so I don't know why else there should be a problem. Lee  
cannot reproduce any of this on his platform (linux/x86 and possibly  
ppc).
