Good question. Partly that I suddenly had less time in my life for
recreational programming, and partly I think that the FFI stuff was too
immature when I first became interested. Now, of course, the libffi
stuff (IIRC) has been integrated which greatly improves the situation...
it's probably time for me to have another go.

Did I? It was Michael Bridgen who wrote the Chicken Cairo bindings; I
don't think I wrote any Cairo stuff for Slate, unless I've completely
forgotten?
