Is the important thing to be able to use Lisp for ANY purpose? If so,
what kind of pain is total purity worth?

How is a LispOS supposed to be better than just writing lots of
programs in a Unix/Win95 Lisp, and using libraries like ILU, etc. to
talk to the world? How is a LispOS supposed to be better than, say, a
New Improved Multithreaded Emacs?

[My vote for Ultimate Lisp World View goes to the research going
on at NEC. Specifically, Kali Scheme
http://www.neci.nj.nec.com/PLS/kali.html, and the Sting OS.]
