there are other options besides gpl and no license at all.

why not decide precisely what things are important to protect and write our
own license (perhaps gpl inspired, depending on how the winds blow)?

for example :

it seems like one of the big screws of having a company pick up
the system would be that the system would lose reflectivity; the company would
likely not make the source available to any changes they made.

so put this in the license, but don't prevent the company from selling the 
software it writes as long as this constraint is obeyed.
