Seen in comp.arch today:

VLIW's original origins _was_ from writable control store. VLIW
started out as a regularization of the control bits of multiple
functional units, to make things easier to control, and things
like trace scheduling come from hand techniques for writing
microcode. Look up the history of FPS.
