GCC 3.3 troubles

Hi, I'm hoping I can gather some platform information here.
I've run into some problems with Slate where GCC 3.3.1 was used,
particularly on MacOS X Panther and within Cygwin with current VMs.
Basically the VM can load the images fine, but saving and reloading or
loading a bootstrapped image results in a crash on start-up.
Has anyone seen similar symptoms (or even better, hasn't and still has
GCC 3.3.x)? My fix so far has been to use -O2 in the COPTFLAGS in the
distributed Makefile instead of -O3.
