It is to note, also, that the Cygwin DLL overhead is not essential
to compile the Slate VM (at least until recently: correct me if this
is changed). You can compile a VM which references the Windows native
API with MinGW (http://mingw.org/) or other C compilers (but MS VC++
seems tricky).
