playground construction

thanks to Chris for the john mccarthy pointer and the foo.c addition to
the discussion.  i hadn't looked at jmc's papers before.  now that i
have, i have more ammunition to work with.  i'm researching quite
heavily into his work to see what it can add and won't add to the
project.  i am also concurrently working on the first vm in c
(semantical/interface issues being the development bottleneck, of
course).  wish me luck!
