I found this definition a little strange:

Meta-Object: the term for an object which deals with the essential
characteristics of another.

To me, an object's base-level semantics are its essential
characteristics. If you change those, you get a very different object.
Its meta-level semantics are just implementation details: changing a
transitory object into a persistent one, for example, doesn't change
its essence.

Of course, it might just be the case that the word doesn't mean what I
think it means...

One tip about Lyx: by default it generates PDF files that look great in
Ghostview but are a pain to read in Acrobat Reader. Go to the "Layout"
menu, "Document..." option and in the "Document" tab change "Fonts:" to
"pslatex". There are other workarounds but this was good enough for me.
