Its meta-level semantics are just implementation details: changing a

Of course, it might just be the case that the word doesn't mean what I
think it means...
One tip about Lyx: by default it generates PDF files that look great in
Ghostview but are a pain to read in Acrobat Reader. Go to the "Layout"
menu, "Document..." option and in the "Document" tab change "Fonts:" to
"pslatex". There are other workarounds but this was good enough for me.
